Strata: Layered Three Stories, Framed as Two
Artist’s Exterior Impression
Nestled on a half-acre plot in Karen, Strata is a bespoke residence that blends functionality, cultural sensitivity in plan, and sculptural design into one cohesive whole. The home is deliberately positioned slightly off-center on the site as an intentional move that creates a boutique-scale front garden while allowing for a generous rear garden that frames the primary view and anchors the outdoor experience. We achieved by physical moving the house with rudimentary pegs and strings on the ground up until we were satisfied.

Three Stories, Framed as Two
The client required a three-storey home to serve the household. In response, we designed a vertically efficient plan while visually expressing it as two layers on the elevation. This framing technique softens the mass and emphasizes proportion in spite of the tall nature of the house. The composition follows asymmetrical layering, giving the home a modern, sculptural layered character true to its name, Strata.

A Living Core of Light and Air
At the heart of Strata is a double-volume lounge, a soaring space that floods the interior with natural light and a sense of airiness. This central space connects directly to the dining area via a shared chimney, a warm architectural gesture that anchors daily life and family gathering especially on those colder evenings of June to August in Nairobi.

Culturally Considered Living
In respect to cultural traditions, the dining room leads into a closed, spacious modern kitchen, ensuring privacy while maintaining elegant functionality. The layout is enhanced by a back kitchen, walk-in pantry, and dedicated laundry area, reflecting a deep understanding of everyday living patterns.

Supportive Infrastructure
To accommodate staff or extended family, the home includes two detached staff quarters (DSQs) tucked discreetly at the rear, allowing for full-service support while preserving privacy.
Sustainability at the Core
Strata is designed with future-conscious living in mind. The roof hosts photovoltaic solar panels with battery storage, making solar energy the primary power source while keeping the national grid as a backup. A solar water heating system adds to the home's environmental stewardship without compromising luxury.
Indoor Meets Outdoor
The lounge spills out onto defined rear terraces, blurring the boundaries between indoor comfort and outdoor serenity. These terraces open onto the larger rear garden, designed not only as a view corridor but as a space for leisure, reflection, and hosting.
