Forest at the door

Nairobi, Kenya

Set along the edge of Karura Forest, the garden apartments are shaped by its most defining condition. A dramatic 15-metre fall across the site. Rather than flattening the terrain and stacking conventional apartments, the architecture steps naturally down the slope. Each residence is positioned to preserve uninterrupted views towards the forest, while living, dining and private spaces open directly onto gardens and the surrounding landscape.

A restrained palette of charcoal exterior paint, exposed steel, OSB and restored timber allows the buildings to sit quietly within their setting. Floor-to-ceiling glazing, private gardens and naturally ventilated spaces further dissolve the boundary between inside and outside, extending the experience of the forest into everyday life.

A landscaped pedestrian spine follows the contours of the site, connecting the residences and shared amenities as the development descends towards the stream. At the lowest point, the gym overlooks the water and surrounding vegetation.
